first_imgJamar Taylor (CB Boise State)Height: 5-11Weight: 1922012-13 Stats: 51 Tackles, 2.5 Sacks, 4 Interceptions, 3 Forced FumblesProjected Round: 3-4Taylor was an All Mountain West first teamer in 2012 for Boise State. He is physical corner, who excelled in press coverage in college. Taylor is a versatile defensive back, which can be used in many different situations including: man to man and zone coverages, setting the edge on run plays, and blitzing from the corner. The major question is Taylor’s closing speed against some of the faster NFL wide outs. Though he may have answered many of his critics, running a 4.39 40 Yard Dash at the NFL combine.During an interview with Glenn Clark, Taylor said he used to play on “grass, and dirt, and rocks,” growing up. His best game was against one of his toughest opponents, LSU, registering 12 tackles. Johnson is a natural 3-4 Inside Linebacker, playing in Nick Saban’s pro style defense. He was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team in 2009, while being a cornerstone for three National Title Teams. Even though he does not have blazing speed or athleticism, he makes up for it with a “lunch pail” attitude for the game.Johnson told Thyrl Nelson and Damon Yaffe that playing at Alabama, he still had to push for playing time on such a talented roster. He was considering entering the military, until being offered a scholarship by Nick Saban and emphasizing get a good education (Listen to the entire interview at http://bit.ly/15lct35).Interesting Fact: Nico Johnson played in every game for Alabama while a member of the Crimson Tide.Player Comparison: Jameel McClain (LB Baltimore Ravens) As the NFL Draft approaches (April 25-27), the Ravens will examining many prospects on their big board.  The important thing is not only to find players that fit the scheme but also where they will be available.  The Draft is about value meeting needs, and here is a look at some of the value players that the Ravens may consider.Bennie Logan (DT LSU)Height: 6-3Weight: 2952012-13 Stats: 45 Tackles, 2 sacksDraft Projection: Rounds 2-4Logan had a somewhat disappointing year at LSU with lower Statistics than expected, playing around a defense full of high draft pick talent. Though they do not tell the whole story of Logan, who can eat up a lot of space. In the thrashing during the 2011 National Championship Game against Alabama, Logan was one of the few LSU players to have a good game, notching 6.5 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He has the potential to be a force along the defensive line, which could several different roles as a 4-3 DT or 3-4 DE.After speaking with Thyrl Nelson, Logan said during the NFL Combine, he had a tweaked Hamstring and will improve upon his numbers at his Pro Day. He feels he several different positions along the defensive line, no matter the scheme (Listen to the entire interview at http://bit.ly/12gZMZ9).Interesting Fact: According to NFL.com, over the past decade, Logan’s number 18 has been awarded by the LSU coaching staff to the player who best represents what it means “to be a Tiger on and off the field.”Player Comparison: Cory Redding (DL Indianapolis Colts) Kiko Alonso (LB Oregon)Height: 6-4Weight: 2462012-13 Stats: 81 Tackles, 4 Interceptions, 2 Forced FumblesProjected Round: 3-5Alonso was a very productive player for Oregon, when he was on the field. His draft stock has taken a hit for issues off the field. He was suspended for the entire 2010 season for a DUI arrest, while also being suspended 2011 for 1 game due to an arrest. Alonso reportedly, broke into someone’s apartment and passed out due to intoxication. He played in a hybrid 3-4 scheme, at the MIKE (Middle Linebacker) but also would fit in as a 4-3 SAM (Strong-side Linebacker). If it weren’t for his track record, Alonso could have gone as early as the beginning of the second round. He told Glenn Clark that playing for Oregon prepared him to enter the NFL, because of the strive for excellence and “they are all about football.” Alonso said he met with the Ravens during the Combine, and it “would be an honor to play for that great defense (Listen to the entire interview at  http://bit.ly/XLDMyb). ”Interesting Fact: Alonso won the 2011 Rose Bowl Defensive Player of the Game against Wisconsin, with 5 tackles, 1.5 sacks and an interception.Player Comparison: Rey Maualuga (LB Cincinnati Bengals) Kenny Tate (OLB/S Maryland)Height: 6-4Weight: 2302012-13 Stats: 42 Tackles, 4 SacksProjected Round: 5-7Tate was highly recruited as a top rated Wide Receiver, before converting to defense his freshman year. He spent most of his time at College Park as a Free Safety but switched to the SAM (Strong-side Linebacker) as a senior. His athleticism is evident in his versatility at several different positions, even though he had a knee injury, which forced him to sit out most of the 2011 season.Tate played admirably his senior year at an unfamiliar position, where he had little experience. Teams will have to decide whether to continue to develop him in the box or utilize athleticism as a Safety. At defensive back, he would be a physical presence whereas at Linebacker, his speed would be an asset but would need to put on more bulk.He told Glenn Clark, that he is “going in as Safety” and “has cut some weight.” Tate believes it would easier to move down to Linebacker than move backwards into the defensive backfield (Listen to the entire interview at http://bit.ly/13rjgcS).Interesting Fact: When starting all 13 games in 2010 at Free Safety, Tate led Maryland with 100 tackles, while also having 3.5 Sacks, 4 Forced Fumbles and 3 Interceptions.Player Comparison: Madieu Williams (S Washington Redskins)* All Photos Courtesy of NFL.com.*last_img read more

Ask It Results: The Candlelight Processional

first_imgShare This! It’s Wednesday, and time for Ask It. Peace on Earth. Goodwill to all. Drinking around the world. Two of these can be found this time of year at Epcot. (Although, truth told, which two you find probably depends who you are traveling with.) One of the most popular events this time of year is Epcot’s Candlelight Processional, a retelling of the Christmas story with a celebrity narrator and full choir. People wait in long lines for a chance to get into one of the multiple shows each evening, but for some people, it is a “one and done” experience or something that doesn’t hold interest to wait to get in.Last week, we asked you:Is the Candlelight Processional something you like to do every year, occasionally, or never? Here’s your results.Every Year (234 votes, 27.5%)The Candlelight Processional itself lasts about 45 minutes. That doesn’t include waiting in line, sometimes up to 2-3 hours depending on celebrity narrator, if you opt not to do a dining package (where you can wait less time, but have to take the time for a meal that you may not have done otherwise). No matter how you slice it, the Candlelight Processional is a lot of time commitment during a vacation day. Many of the people who said that they go every year also mentioned that they were locals going on an average day instead of a vacation day. For others, the “every year” vote also included people who go every year that they happen to be in the area. It is a family tradition for many people, however, and something that many people wouldn’t want to miss.Never (302 votes, 35.5%)The “never” votes include both people who have never done it/never desire to do it, or people who have done it once and never would want to do it again, even if other people they were with wanted to see it. The Candlelight Processional is probably one of the most Christian-centric events at Disney outside of Night of Joy. For some people, both Christian and non-Christian, the Candlelight Processional has the vibe of a church service, and that is something that isn’t always part of a vacation experience. For others, even though it is a beautiful show to experience, the time commitment again comes into play. There’s so much holiday stuff to see and do, it’s tough to carve out time for this long show. For less of a time commitment and no line, people can walk right across the way and catch one of the Voices of Liberty performances with similar songs of holiday cheer (and a mix of religious and secular songs).Occasionally (318 votes, 37%)Just edging out the win this week was the occasionally vote. Sometimes when a special event is experienced every year, it loses some of the specialness. For many people, going to the Candlelight Processional occasionally helps keep it a special experience, and something to look forward to when the mood hits to go and see it. Going occasionally also means that it is easier to justify the cost of the dinner package, helping to stave off the lengthy time waiting in line. And although the plot of the Candlelight Processional doesn’t change (it is the Christmas story after all), each narrator is able to bring their own personality to the telling of the story, making it a slightly different show every time.So there you have this week’s results. Next week’s question is live on Twitter and here. In the meantime, do you have any other holiday traditions on a Disney vacation? Let us know in the comments.last_img read more

BitHub brings digital currency to South Africa

first_img19 June 2015South Africa’s first digital currency incubator and hub is up and running in the form of BitHub, headquartered at the Bandwidth Barn in Woodstock, Cape Town.A cross section of traders, consumers, tech geeks and bitcoin enthusiasts were at the launch. Together they created an atmosphere of optimism and excitement at the potential of digital currency across all levels of commerce and tech.Speaking at the event, Joshin Raghubar, the chairman of the Bandwidth Barn, said: “We are entering into a new age in banking and finance and are in need of a platform and community for innovation within this space. BitHub aims to amplify the community of development in digital currency, and this launch event, focusing on the payment space of digital currency, forms a great segway to greater innovation within digital currency.”Financial technologyIan Merrington, the chief executive of the Cape Innovation and Technology Initiative (Citi), added: “We’ve been looking at the fintech space for a while, and the recent Bitcoin Conference lit a spark that we are excited to take further. Here is a platform that has potential for disruptive innovation that can solve Africa-specific needs, serve the unbanked, and also play a transformative role.”The formal banking sector was showing a keen interest in the digital currency and innovation space.“That’s why BitHub’s launch is timeous and vital,” he said. “Now there is a place to gather, to learn, to innovate; a community where digital currency entrepreneurs and developers can meet, swap ideas and solve problems. Citi is geared to help unblock constraints, backed by a business-friendly local government.Learn how bitcoin works:Legislation“We recognise that there are several challenges to overcome. Legislation around fintech needs to change, educating consumers and merchants on the philosophy and principles of digital currency, and an immature infrastructure, to name a few.“But there are also amazing opportunities; big banking is starting to invest in fintech development, we can unleash the Western Cape as a frontrunner in the development of fintech, and create awareness and positive discussion around the social impact offered by this technology through its open protocol.”Roslyn Lavers, the business development manager at PayFast, the payments processing service for South African websites, spoke about trends merchants such as Takealot, which accepted bitcoin, were experiencing.“In July 2014, PayFast’s decision to allow buyers to accept payment with bitcoin was largely exploratory, but we have been surprised by how much it is actually being used. The first week we saw payments totalling R50 000, and since then a steady trade value has been maintained.“Now we have in excess of 30 000 merchants that have bitcoin enabled, with the current trend being tech merchants embracing the bitcoin payments, and coffee and beer merchants following close behind.”Early adoptersHowever, it was still early days for bitcoin use in South Africa. “Early adopters are using this, and are using it consistently, which is a good sign, and has exceeded our expectations.”Francois Paul, a developer from BitX, a global bitcoin wallet, exchange and merchant service, explained why bitcoin was better than traditional payment methods.“Bitcoin allows for free flow of value, without a trust element in the equation,” he said. “It is a digital asset that cannot be copied, that has no counterparty risk and no charge back – it is not reversible. So the potential for fraud and scams is eliminated. It is borderless, fast, cheap and easy, and once people realise how easy it is to use, and the saving on transactional fees, consumer demand will spark a merchant response.”In South Africa, Landmark Computers was the first seller to accept bitcoin. Its chief executive, Andrew van der Nest said there was no risk and the network was incredibly safe.“We have had no issues with bitcoin as a merchant; the money is guaranteed in our account and cannot be reversed. Plus we love how ownership, control and responsibility are now absolutely in the hands of the end user, where traditionally it is the bank or merchant’s responsibility. Times are changing and we are changing with it.”Regarding education and legislation, Enrico Calandro from Research ICT Africa called on governments to become involved. “Digital currencies benefit the people, especially the poor, due to the low fees synonymous with virtual currency, and the ease of access thanks to smart phones.”Developers soughtIn closing, Merrington called on developers and entrepreneurs to participate in the growth of the technology. “We want to create a stronger community by collaborating with established players and incubating and supporting new ideas in this space.”BitHub will host regular workshops and events on digital currency and fintech innovation.Citi was established in 1998 to develop Cape Town and the region as a global technology cluster and hub for innovation that is a significant contributor to economic growth. It has become a blueprint for industry and public sector collaboration models for sector development. The Bandwidth Barn, a Citi operated initiative, has been recognised as Africa’s leading and most established incubator and accelerator. It also offers shared office space for entrepreneurs.Source: BitHublast_img read more
