Government awaits outcome of probe on assault by Navy chief

The Navy Commander was seen assaulting a journalist despite the journalist repeatedly saying he was from the media. Wijegunaratne led a Navy operation to clear the protesters who had prevented ships from entering and leaving the port. Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said that there was a concern over the conduct of the Navy Commander since he was not in uniform.However he said the Government will await the outcome of an ongoing investigation into the incident before commenting further. The Government says it is awaiting the outcome of an investigation over an assault on a journalist by Navy Commander Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne.Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne assaulted a journalist covering a protest by workers at the Hambantota port on Saturday. The temporary port workers at the Hambantota port have been striking since last Tuesday demanding that they be taken on as permanent employees of the state-owned Sri Lanka Port Authority after a move by the Government to lease the port to China.Some 483 temporary workers are demanding that they be made permanent before the lease. (Colombo Gazette)
